Why Worship?

POSTED June 18, 2007

What an amazing friend we have in Jesus. His faithfulness is something that blows my mind when I stop and see how eternal our God really is. He never changes. I can’t help but acknowledge our very faithful God.

Worship isn’t something that’s new. Worship isn’t some newly created fad. People have been worshipping since the very beginning of time. It’s what we were created to do. All of God’s creation is made to bring Him praise. The forest with it’s tall trees and green grass shouts worship to our God. The ocean with it’s waves and every fish of the sea whispers it’s praises out to God.

There was someone in the Bible who was not much different from you and me. His name was David. David was a young guy who made good choices and bad choices in his life. But there was one thing consistent about David. He knew how to worship God. God even called him a man after his own heart. David wrote the book of Psalms in the Bible. Psalms is a collection of prayers and songs to God.

Maybe you’re not sure HOW to worship. Worship isn’t something that happens only in one place with just the right song. Worship happens in our life everyday, in our actions and in our words. The book of Psalms is full of wonderful examples of how David cried out to God and praised Him. Just like the faithfulness of our God worship isn’t new it’s what each of us are created to do.

The principles of worship are the same but the methods, style of music, and way I lead each group is different. When I lead kids in worship it is the sweetest, purest thing. I better understand the “faith of a child” that Jesus spoke of in the Bible. Teenagers don’t want to be told what to do but why they should do it. They want to feel. Making worship real and tangible to them and communicating in a way that can inspire them to worship their Savior is my goal. College students I have found to be very free in their worship and hungry for worship. They’ve turned that major corner in their life where they have committed themselves to following Christ and they want more. They won’t settle for less, they want to move forward in all God has called them to. Adults, different ages, personalities, nationalities, backgrounds, musical styles on and on and on. Finding a unique way to connect all these groups and unifying them in worshipping our Creator. If you take a step, adults will no doubt follow where you lead. I believe that worship leading is being nothing more than a mirror to our audience showing them what worship is and helping them to reflect that worship to God.

In all these scenarios I find the same joy because it’s not about me, not about my voice or the music, not about the clothes I’m wearing or how great or bad my hair is that day. Worship is about adoration of our Savior and that is the reason we were all created. May you continue to find joy as you lead the children of God in singing the praises He alone deserves.
